Muslim Americans: An Identity Crisis

Some people start their morning facing hard questions such as ‘what breakfast or coffee will I have?’ and ‘what shoe or shirt should I wear?’. Every morning however I wake up and ask myself, ‘who am I?’, ‘what identity am I wearing today?’. A time of anguish and doubt, an identity crisis in the making, my identity keeps on forming, evolving and regressing and is questioned every day.

When I left Egypt more than 30 years ago, I was a disgruntled, confused Egyptian, an Arab Muslim who was shopping around for a better life and better identity. Living 25 years of my life under a despotic dictatorship in Egypt, my personal identity was as a proud Egyptian; Arab or Muslim. That didn’t work well for me though, and defeat after defeat I left for America and escaped to a faraway place, a place that is as glamorous as their movies and seducing as their bottles of Coca-Cola.

Honoring The National Anthem.. and Other Horror Stories!

Ahmed Tharwat

Im going to say this and maybe regret it later, I don’t go to live sporting events in America; football, baseball or basketball,it is not so much because of the smell of hotdogs and beer or the fact that sport here appears more entertainment than being competitive, where people go mainly to consume food and the sport itself, regardless of winning or losing.

The concept of a sports fan hasn’t been fully introduced in professional sports yet. A fan is someone who supports a team and hates other teams, he/she acts as if his/her life depends on it, when his team plays, there is no time to drink, eat or watch the replays on big screen TVs.

Trum Trophy wife

“If facing with a trump supporter in your neighborhood, introduce your spouse as your girlfriend/boyfriend thing, It seems to soften the culture war a bit!

Now it is real, folks. It is written. The Donald will be our 45th president.  The ISIS of American politics, the one who beheaded more than a dozen politicians on national TV. The joke is on us, and he is the only one laughing.

I wonder what Khizr Khan would say about this: Lesson learned — you don’t have to read the Constitution to be president? Muslims are usually politically homeless, stranded between two political systems that ignore them or take them for granted. President-elect Donald has alienated and scared lots of people and groups during his two-year campaign — Mexicans, women, blacks, gays. But Donald gave Muslims a special attention, from banning and registering them, For Donald good Muslims are  the informants ones.

Police Brutality… from Cairo to Minneapolis!

POLICE BRUTALITY… FROM CAIRO TO MINNEAPOLIS

Shannon Stapleton/Reuters

You know the situation here is bad when family and friends in Egypt are worried about me because of police brutality and not Islamophobia. The latest tragic shooting of police officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge is changing the conversation and debate on police brutality and racism in this country.

A cop in Cleveland implicated President Obama “….the president of the United States has blood on his hands that he will not be able to wash off.” Even a black Police Sheriff in Baton Rouge thinks Black Lives Matter is a terrorist organization. In an election year politicians’ rhetoric and even President Obama’s fears have heightened the situation, widening the gap between police and the communities they serve.
